Techniques of Meditation
There could be countless techniques of meditation because ultimately the whole life, every moment and every activity of it, becomes a meditation! However, 112 techniques of meditation have been prescribed in one of the most comprehensive texts on meditation called the Vigyan Bhairav Tantra.
These techniques had all been developed and propounded based on the human nature and the nature of his mind. A meditator is expected to try all the techniques one by one for a prescribed period of time till he finds a technique that suits him the best given the nature of his mind.
Some techniques are like witnessing the cycle of breathing, witnessing the act of walking, witnessing the playing music, witnessing the act of love making, smelling a fragrant object, watching a candle flame burning and so on.
My favorite object of meditation is my navel. I witness the fall of breathing onto my navel and then leaving back. This relaxes my mind and brings it into the present moment of witnessing.
Meditation could be done with closed or open eyes but it depends on the particular technique. In the beginning closing one’s eyes is helpful as it helps mind be diverted from outside world.
